Rome or Greece? I didn't want to intervene in the "Greece?" thread, but now I have enough doubts, Greece or Rome, which of the two is the true mother of Western civilization as we know it now, with all that it entails (Christianity, language, judicial institutions and laws, art; among many other things). As far as I know, Greece and its influence only came with the Slavs, the Greeks proper and to some extent with the Muslims when the Ottomans conquered Byzantium. But on the other hand, Rome also contributed with language and institutions, all the colonial empires of Western Europe were modeled after the Roman model (British, Spanish, Portuguese, French empires) and even the model of education in Germany during the unification carried out by Bismark was also inspired by the Roman model. So, which of these two civilizations is really the mother of Western civilization as we know it?

None of them, they were classical civilizations, western civilization takes much influence from them but calling the west a continuation of rome or greece is wrong, modern western civilization is created by the northern european tribes and the catholic church, aswell as influences from the said classical civilizations.

If it was not for the French and German philosophers then the senate system and the church would not mean much to today's standarts. I think western civilisation has no parents for it runs on the human will, morals and sense of judgement rather than costumes. As we see today 'unliberal democracies' in Europe are wildly unappealing to westerners despite masteeful classic western architecture, fashion and art. The first western civilisation and the main contributor would probably be France.

The question itself is redundant, Greek and Roman civilisations were fundamentally intertwined, Roman religion, language, writing, philosophy all had major Greek influences. In this sense, you could say that Greece would be the mother of western civilisation as it was the older of the two, but that's just if you want to be technical.

I agree. But you can say that Rome was slightly more influential since it brought Greco-Roman culture to half of Europe. Personally though, I think its hard to pinpoint a "mother" of western civilization though. Out of the two it would definitely be Greece, but 1500 ad Europe looks different than Greece did at the height of Athens.

Absolutely agree. Best example of this is how greeks invented anal sex and romans made it better by practicing it with women.
