NY's governor recently said he would raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. Is this too much? WIll this help people making lower incomes? Will it cause people to have more money to spend allowing for the economy to prosper or will it destroy jobs and tank the economy? I'll try to stay unbiased in the beginning but you probably already know where I lean.

Unlike in my home country, in the Netherlands, (and I'm guessing in the United States also) you can't do anything on $57.20 a day. Pay the grocery bills, buy bus tickets to get places and get a one-room lodge. That's most of the money right there. It's an inhumane standard of living.

Minimum wage isn't meant to support a family. It is for entry level jobs when one first enters the work force. It's meant for teenagers with their first job and people with minimal skills. If you want to support yourself or your family, you get an education to get actual skills and get an actual job that pays more than minimum wage. Plus, doubling it will lead to massive lay offs and small businesses to start failing as they can't afford to have any more workers.

Oh yeah? And if everyone get an actual education and "actual" work (thanks alot by the way for insulting tenths of millions of hardworking people from all around the globe) who is gonna do all the "lesser" jobs? Who is gonna be a janitor, a cleaner, a farmer, a construction worker, a waiter, a store employee, a nurse? You realize that if every single person got educated a. they could never be all employeed, they barely are at the moment b. nobody would work on "simpleton" but very much importand jobs, leading to societal dysfunction.

This is why it's laughable whenever I read your responses. You act like anyone who disagrees with you is either an anarchist or someone who is richer than carnegie and must be killed. I'd take you more seriously and would waste more of my time .responding to your half ass comments

Do you want me to count the fallacies in your post and reasoning? I speculated you must be rich, because it was a reasonable explanation, as to why you support so obsessively an unregulated market and right wing policies, that mostly work in favour of the big corporations. I used simple logic. And i was proven (?) wrong, it was just a speculation and theres nothing wrong with being wrong every once in a while.

But dismissing the rest of my post and arguments, because i was wrong on a speculation is laughable, lmao. Nice tactic to take the easy way out. Also i never acted like anyone here is anarchist lol. Where do you get this stuff. Even your ad hominems could be better, you could provide a justification behind them, so we all know why my comments are "half assed".

I know a person, who you constantly critisize and judge in this forum, yet you use the exact tactic he uses sometimes (and you all are quick to point out when he does). The "you are retarded, therefore i wont adress your points, i will just claim victory on my own". Food for thought.

I actually work for a living, so i apologize if i am not 24/7 in this forum responding to you. I also make 3 times the minimum wage of my country, but i would support immediately and happily, every increase in the minimum wage in my country, no matter the repercussion to me and my finances. I would gladly take a hit, if that means some of my working fellow countrymen, can exit poverty.

In mexico, the minimum wage is 7 bucks a month, yet daddy pays his employees 10 bucks a day
If daddy pays them less than 10, they refuse to work. If daddy pays them more than 10 then he won't make much of a profit.

Its simple, you don't like how much you are pay? Go find another job.
Nobody wants to work? Increase the wage.

And no, daddy is not rich, just an average person. No way to compete with the big companies that have monopolies and are able to pay their employees more while keeping the prices of the services cheap.

Also khal, i am not illegal :3 that hurt my feelings. What happen to the borderless global anarchist state?
:p

This now, yes i can understand. I realize some small business, who doesnt make much profit will get hurt, but they will find a way. My opinion is that it is needed and overall it will do more good than bad.

And dont worry, illegal or not, you are my favourite mexican't <3

If millions of people got a pay raise over night, it would cause inflation. Businesses would lay off low skilled employees to get the better educated one and prices will go up to cover the cost. It's the poor that will suffer when they find it harder to find a job and then find it harder to buy necessities due to those higher cost. Those that are educated and skilled that already have a job will suffer as heir wages will not increase but will still suffer the increase of the cost of living. You speculated in an earlier post that small businesses that don't make much profit will "find a way". What will that be? Hiring less people? Laying off people? Raising their store prices which could make customers go away? All for what? So someone working at McDonalds can make 30k a year?

I despise poverty. I don't like war. The only war I want to see is a war on poverty. But raising the minimum wage does not address the problem at hand- that people can't find good paying jobs. You don't turn McDonald's into a "good paying" job, you provide the opportunity for people to get a better paying job. WHere is the incentive to work harder and find a better paying job when you make 30k taking people's order at a drive thru window?

Eshkruar nga Pheonixking929, 23.07.2015 at 18:05

Oh yes, you got me Tirpitz. I think everyone living in poverty should starve to death so we no longer have poverty> the fake mindset you and others use to make people like me seem like heartless bastards to try and have some sort of moral high ground. How about you bring me a study that is not 12 year sold? How about you bring me a study that points to how in Los Angeles The amount of young adults employed dropped by four percent after they raised their minimum wage. How about we talk about when youth employment dropped by 15%. How about you show me a study that deals with America, based on the economic problems of America. Small business owners are the largest employers in America. You would make it harder for these people to hire others by raising their minimum wage. It is not the job of the government to force a business to pay more than it is worth to hire someone. A person with no education and no skill does not deserve to be paid $600 a week by taking my order at a drive thru menu. A business would rather hire someone with more skills and higher education than someone like a teenarger or someone tryign to work their way through college. EVery state and city in AMerica has different economics. There is no possible way the federal government will be able to establish a "livable" wage across the board. 22 states have already taken steps to increase their minimum wage above the federal minimum wage. Cities across the country have done the same. Why? Because living in New York cost a hell of a lot more than living in South Dakota. This is why South Dakota should not be forced to pay the same "livable" wage as someone living in New York.

well, 22 out of 50 that means there still are 28 states in wich some people cant live from what they get paid for working 6 days a week, 10 hours a day. if there was nobody working in the drive trough, cleaning the streets or driving taxi, your streets would be dirty, you could never get a burger and would actually have to cook for yourself and you'll have to walk to the airport. these people who work for less than what they need to live without having to bag charity for money are required for society to work. And now you belive because they dont have qualification they shouldnt be able to live from working 10 hours a day, 6 days a week, 50 weeks a year for you and your living standard. i never said that there has to be a 15$/h minimum wage in the entire us, i'm saying that everyone should be able to live from their jobs. what would work for example is something like this: minimum wage= income required for subsistence + 100$ per month wich would be more in new york and less in north dakota. 28 states shouldnt have people starving.

you brought up I didn't respond to your post....... I forgot D=

The 22 states with a higher minimum wage still have poverty and people starving- you understand that correct?

As for raising it, I agree with you that it shouldn't be 15 dollars (as many people want it). You (or was it aqui?) brought up a slow movement toward a system. I'm okay with raising it too say 8 dollars or hell, even 9. Anymore and it risk setting off inflation. Do it quickly (like raising it too 15 dollars over night) and it would be disastrous.

As for people working in jobs such as a janitor, yes they're needed. But they also aren't paid minimum wage (at least in my state). Minimum wage is as I said before, for people who are entering the workforce like youth, teenagers, etc. It should NOT be for someone in their thirties. This doesn't mean someone who HAS to work in these jobs is any lesser- anyone who works to provide for themselves and their families is nothing less than the person working in a higher paying career. The issue I'm talking about is the fact that that thirty year old can only find work at a minimum wage job- that is unacceptable. It can be the fault of the individual for not working (and yes, there are drones who refuse to work or refuse to work themselves up to better careers) but it is also the fault of the government (local, state, national, etc.) for not providing a suitable environment for business to prosper. ANd I'm not talking about big corporations (two huge health insurances are now attempting to combine into basically a conglomerate over the healthcare market. You know I'm a pseudo capitalist and therefor you and I both know this will simply raise the cost of health insurance and medicine), I'm talking about a shrinking Middle Class and an even smaller entrepreneurial group.

I said before I'm not against poor people, I'm against poverty. And I don't think we should make working at a drive thru window the new AMerican dream. We can do better than that. If that's offensive (the PC police is ever watching) then find, call me offensive for thinking the majority of hard working Americans can do better than that. But we can only get there from a great education system and a great economy. I've heard the stories of the guy working three jobs but can't support his family and I feel bad. But raising minimum wage doesn't solve the issue I want to be addressed- a lack of good paying jobs. Jobs in manufacturing (that have been exported out of the country) and jobs that require higher education. College is more expensive as ever and while I don't think America is ready for a "free" education, I would be mroe than happy to support interest free loans so anyone able to attend college can get there (whether it be state, community, erc.)

The fast food industry shouldn't be the line of work that Americans can only get. I want them to get into careers that pay them well because those jobs have always paid well, not because we are so destitute and our higher skilled jobs have been exported so much that now the government steps in not to help brign those jobs back, but to simply artificially raise prices.

Many corporations are greedy. And many of them make stellar profits. But don't think raising the minimum wage will convince them to "redistribute" their wealth. Minimum wage is not suppose to be a livable wage. And no one should have to live in an economy so destructive that only minimum wage jobs are left.

I personally support the $15/hr minimum wage, now that I've taken a trip to western Europe.

At first, my opinion was that people should be grateful for a lenient $7.15 per hour. Not now. I haven't seen much of the US, but I assume things are kinda similar to Western Europe, which I have visited.

Unlike in my home country, in the Netherlands, (and I'm guessing in the United States also) you can't do anything on $57.20 a day. Pay the grocery bills, buy bus tickets to get places and get a one-room lodge. That's most of the money right there. It's an inhumane standard of living.

How do you get an education when you can just about afford to exist on your income? Universities are far from cheap (especially in the US) and any kind of education takes a chunk out of your working hours and therefore your wages.

Heck, I never even said anything about a family. In the Netherlands, you grab three meals a day in McDonalds, and that's $120~$150 a week. Good luck paying for that when you're earning $285 a week. Family? Forget it.

Sorry to keep using the Netherlands as a model. It's because I've never actually been to the US. I assume things are similar in Western Europe and the US.

You can't eat McDonalds three times a day........ safer to just stay at Chernobyl for a week

You also have to understand though we do have food stamps (now they're EBT cards to get rid of the stigma surrounding food stamps, sad that people are so judgy of people who are in need). Welfare usually does a good job at keeping a family afloat.

As for education, like I said before, college is expensive and that's why I support loans to people so they can get educated and find a job.

You can also develop a trade like carpentry without going to college. Community colleges are also very flexible. An old neighbor of mine worked during the day and went to school at night for a couple of hours and slowly developed enough credits to graduate.

No one is denying it's hard to live in poverty. All I'm saying is we can't fix that by drastically introducing millions of dollars into the economy over night and then not expect inflation to occur. That simply raises the coast of living so the people who received a raise now still have a hard time getting their needs met while those who did not get a raise still feel the hurt as they have to spend more.

Most importantly, I think it's imperative we get a jobs program in so those who are unemployed are able to at least have a stable job with a stable income. I don't know about Western Europe, but we got pummeled with snow and rain and pot holes are a huge problem across the country (at least the east coast and a little west of the appalachians). Bridges need to be rebuilt/repaired, our infrastructure is crashing. I'd be okay with a stimulus package of getting people to work in construction. They're working a job that can pay well and it remains constant.

The minimum wage is not raised "overnight" bro. Even when Seattle raised it to $15 an hour, it will take a couple years. That being said, I don't think there is any conclusive evidence on either side of this debate but It's true that working conditions in the US have declined since at least the 90's: especially since 2008. IMO, the government picked up where private sector left off, resulting in massive numbers of people working minimum wage on various forms of welfare. If you complain about infrastructure problems, maybe you should tell the 1% to contribute some of that $$$ back to the economy.

Here we go, the old redistribute the wealth. Why should people who are rich now pay for fixing up roads run by the government? Why shouldn't the government simply use it's money to fix it's broken infrastructure? Why not get people who are unemployed or underemployed (seeking better opportunities) and use them to fix these repairs, develop a skill, and be apart of an industry that will always be needed. Stop acting like every problem can be solved by simply blaming the rich. You do realize the top one percent encompases people who make 524,000 dollars a year? Professions of people in this category include doctors and lawyers. These people went to college (many with student loans) and then went on to law or medical school (more student loans). They didn't "graduate" until they reached their late twenties. From there, they start off making a basic income for the next few years (very few become super rich straight out of college). Once they reach their thirties, many go through the bar exam (to become an attorney) and may pursue becoming a judge in their forties. These people didn't become "the top one percent" until after decades of work and schooling and taking on massive student loan debts. A person from medical school has to go through residency before specializing and passing another exam to become an attending (usually 5 years). From there, they may have to go through a fellowship to specialize in one topic (cardiology, anesthesiology, etc.). This usually takes another year of schooling. From there, when once again they're in their forties is when they start making money that encompasses the "top 1 percent". Even then, not all lawyers or doctors become this rich.

The average income of the top 1 percent is 717,000 dollars. Based on 2015 tax brackets, they wold be taxed at 39.6% Let's do the math:

717,000 times .396 gives us 283,932 dollars paid in taxes. Subtract that from the average income and you get 433,068 dollars.

So you're telling me that the top one percent make so much money that they can afford to repair every pothole and ditch and because they "refuse" too, this is why we have infrastructure problems?

The top 1 percent, as reported in 2011, gave the federal government 35% of ALL federal income taxes. And you're saying they have not paid enough? That every problem can simply be solved by "taking it from the rich"?

If you want the top one percent to contribute more to the economy, then stop raising taxes that spook off investors and corporations. We have the highest corporate tax rate in the developed world. Because when a billion dollar company is looking to set up shop, they'll definitely want to pay that tax rate over all the lowered ones in the rest of the developed world.

What are those "facts" you speak off. Present them please.

No one called nursing a lesser job..... please show me where anyone has said that.

Nurses make more than minimum wage- much more. Why? Because to be a nurse you need education and skills in medicine. They worked hard to gain both of those and therefor are paid much more than minimum wage,
Construction workers are not paid minimum wage (at least in the vast majority of cases).

What words did you put in whose mouth? You are the one who picks a career and then decides that it is a "lesser job" in the minds of people who disagree with you. And where is this "cause" you mentioned? I didn't see any of them right a "cause".

As for facts, we have stated it before. When LA raised their minimum wage, youth employment dropped 15% while YA employment dropped 4%. It has been correlated that employment in younger years yields higher chances of future employment.

We were never talking about social democracy, I asserted that the Scandinavian countries are welfare states and not socialist (truth) and you went in an entirely different direction, just admit you're wrong and make it easier on all of us

True socialism doesnt really exist. When most of us say socialism in today , i think we mean social democracy ( at least me, but i can imagine zatara did too) and by definition its the ideology that can make the transition to pure socialism. As i told you it falls under the umbrella of socialism and so does communism.

Moreso, you made two other claims. First one was that Greece was socialist. I called you ignorant there, cause no way to sugarcoat it, you just were. That claim was a joke, i debunked it, hell, history debunks it and its not my fault you made it. Second you said Scandinavian countries are in decline. I told you you were wrong again and that you need to prove your claim, since statistics claim otherwise. We had this discussion about Nordic countries with your friend Tik tok in another thread, im not searching for the links again, you can find it.. His arguments were interesting. Apparetly immigrants with their big black cocks are raping Sweden now bahaha

A nurse is now a "lesser" job? Nurses go through large amounts of education too and can make a descent salary to support themselves and their family.
Also, did I ever say everyone should get an actual job? No. So stop putting words in my mouth to try and "help" your cause.

You believe nursing to be a lesser job, not me. Because you judge people and their work, based on the salary and most nurses are on the minimum if im not mistaken. Construction workers im not sure in the US, they are paid minimum in Balkan countries. Still, its semantics and not the point. The point is this.

Eshkruar nga Dereny, 25.07.2015 at 02:25

Minimum wage isn't meant to support a family. It is for entry level jobs when one first enters the work force. It's meant for teenagers with their first job and people with minimal skills. If you want to support yourself or your family, you get an education to get actual skills and get an actual job that pays more than minimum wage.

So, did i "put" those words in your mouth? Caught a liar with my fish hook it seems.

And also, why do you think i have a "cause" and what would it be? Lmao. For the life of me, i need to stop talking with 10 year olds over the internet.

If you honestly think that almost doubling minimum wage will lead to helping many people without adverse effects to millions of others, then you are just being ignorant to facts.

Nurses make 4 times minimum wage in the US so let's do some research first instead of making accusations. And that whole idiotic statement about a lie makes me laugh. See the word you ignore in that statement is "If" not everyone wants a family so obviously I'm not saying you should get an actual job. Also, some don't need to get a real job as only one parent needs to work in some cases,. Now I will explain some of the facts to you because you are not capable of conducting your own research it seems.

1. Raising minimum wage will cut jobs or hours
Why you ask? Because of two reasons: a) A business wants to make profit or b) A small business can't afford it.
By raising minimum wage, profits go down. To prevent profits from going down, companies will either cut down on hours or lay off workers. Doubling minimum wage will lead to some possibly be helped and others to be in a worse off situation. Small businesses will have to do the same or face closings as they most likely, will not be able to keep up with it.

2. Prices of good will increase
To keep up with the increase cost of workers, companies will raise the price of their products to keep up and continue making profits or to ensure their store(s) will stay open. This hurts any consumer as more money will have to be put out to buy products. It can also force consumers to stop buying as many products as they use to and stick to more the essentials. This hurts businesses and the economy and if consumers aren't buying, more workers to most likely lose their job.

3. Reducing the incentive to get a higher paying job
To not have to work at minimum wage, people seek more education to develop skills. These skills lead them to get a better paying job. Increasing minimum wage will make less people feel they need to get skills to get higher paying jobs.

There are many other reasons and facts as to why minimum wage should not be increased. I only named a few of them above.

There are community colleges that you can attend to get an education and there are programs to assist in this. Loans are available to help get the education; although the loans have to be payed back, the result is a higher paying job that allows you to support yourself and family and still pay back the loan.

All of these skills come from a pre-college level. They require minimal skills and little education. Low skill= low paying. This is what is considered an "entry" level job: a job you take when you just begin entering the workforce. There isn't anything demeaning about it. It is there mainly for youth and young adults who need extra cash. No one in their right mind would think this job is worth a salary of $31,200. Why? Because it's a simple low skilled job. A job worth that much money is one called an EMT.

Basically an EMT is the person that saves lives. They ride in the back of an ambulance and use all their ability to protect people and SAVE lives. They require knowledge of medicine, social skills, and training of higher level and quality than you would receive at McDonalds. People who save lives deserve $15 an hour, not the person taking my order.

You crackers are all the same

Yes, it turned Russia into a superpower which murdered millions of it's ow people before collapsing from unsustainable economic and political debt, corruption, and dictatorship. Oh, and I don't support the Nazis (please point out where I support Nazis or nazism) but thanks again for trying to make people you disagree with as evil

Explain to me how I am a douche bag and an "edgy teen:

Where did I say I was racist? Where did I say my "race" was superior to other "races"? (didn't know colorblind people could be racist D=)

Why should the Rich pay for the poor? They do so through welfare (where you don't even have to look for a job to apply for it. So long as you are poor, you get funding). Taxes should go to help people get out of poverty, but your notion that someone who is successful should then HAVE to help someone who refuses to work is beyond my level of comprehension (waits for sneaky response to this statement).

Yes, people working at McDonalds are people. And people should have the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge to get a better job than working there (job that pays more). And again, where did I say I was a nazi? Nazis support national socialism- I don't support socialism or racism or eugenics so your logic here is again missing the point while also once again making up blatant lies

Everyone deserves the same wage? What the fuck? Why should someone taking my order at McDonald's be paid the same wage as a cardiologist, the person who went to college for four years, then went to medical school for another 4 years, then completed a residency for 5 years, then went through attending years, then went through another year as a fellow to then specialize as a cardiologist, you know operating on people's hearts, be paid the same wage as someone taking a person's order? That's not socialism, that's communism. You yet again accuse me of being a nazi and to think of the people- I do, I think of the millions of Americans who make more than minimum wage because of their hard work in developing their skills through work and training and their knowledge through pursuing education.

Explain to me how I am a typical "nazi", and where I said I support nazism, it's values, it's principles, and where I said (once again) my "race" is superior to other "races". Please, go ahead because now I am just as confused as everyone else who has read my post disagreeing with Hitler and Nazi Germany and the holocaust...... please explain to me how I am a nazi

And crackers? Isn't that a "racist" term against whites? But I understand, I am still the racist

But yes Zatara, keep up your argument about how I am a national socialist. I'm allaergic tobullshit so excuse me whole I grab a tissue.

people should have a decent wage to live with, they are not lesser people like you Nazis make them look like, I bet you would gas all the people with low income if you could, racist cunt.

And you still have yet to describe anything in the arguments. You throw around the word "nazi" because you have no argument what so ever and are trying to get a laugh out of it. If you had any sense of decency you wouldn't go around calling people nazis. You clearly have no understanding of what they did and the many atrocities that were committed by them. How dare you use their name as a way to make yourself feel better. Like I said before, grow up.

As earthbound correctly pointed out, this debate has reached its climax. Everybody made their arguments and from this point on you are just repeating yourself. Therefore i will do it like International and silently walk away..

But not without some last comments.

You think a person kicking a ball should get his millions, but the one working as a cashier or a janitor should live in poverty. You think rich shouldnt be taxed more than the poor and you defend vigorously the 1%. So full of shit. You can be a politician you know. lmao.

Insert, quote from old posts, where you supported Usa war against Vietnnam, Usa war against Middle east, actually Usa intervention in all foreign matters because you had a duty to "police" the world for "righteous" reasons and offcourse supporting every penny of the billions going to the "defense" budget, thereby indirectly supporting all the wars the Usa is engaged too, because as you know, you are the agressor in every single one of those. You are so peacefull.

I seem to remember it was AMerican planes that stopped the genocide in the Balkans. Your EU friends just sat around, talked diplomacy (if it can even be called that) and just allowed people to be slaughtered.

Now this, this lol, is proof that you are living in a pararel universe. This is proof of how distorted your view and perception of world events is.

You dont seem to know even the basics, which is that your "stopping of the genocide" was against international law and Un charters. The humanitarian "stoping of the genocide" was to bomb Serbia back to the stone age, targeting civilian infrastructure, including waterworks, electricworks, TV and radio facilities, bridges, trains, ordinary houses, even the chinese embassy, killing thousands. And virtually all of the claims you used to justify their intervention against Serbia have since been exposed as LIES. And now after your help, Kosovo is an apocalyptic wasteland, still not recognized by the majority needed to enter Un and is ruled by gangs and criminals of the KLA, one of the most horrific terrorist organizations in the world and official accusations of Kosovos Usa installed government being tied to a criminal ring of prostitution, drugs and organ selling, that made human rights watchdogs throughout whole Europe pull their hairs.

Yes i guess my EU friends are idiots. Thanks for the help Usa. Appreciate it
